Piracy biggest threat to OTT industry worldwide

Piracy of the content is one of the biggest issues plaguing the video-streaming or the OTT (over-the-top) industry worldwide and in India, as almost one-third of the revenue is lost due to unauthorised access to content, said Paul Segre, chief executive of UK-based video technology provider Synamedia.

Talking with ET during his India visit, Segre said while his company has a legacy of providing solutions for the payTV industry for the last 30 years, it is now focussing on streaming services across engagement, protection and distribution of content.

“Protection is a very big focus area, which is all about anti-piracy,” he said. “We have this 30-year history in security, but it’s a renaissance period for pirates. There has never been better and original content as companies are spending big money, and the avenues for pirates are too many so they have an easier job than they used to.”

As per a recent analysis report from data research and analytics firm Ampere, the Indian media and entertainment industry lost $2.3 billion in the last one year due to piracy of movie and TV (including web series) content and $886 million in sports piracy.
