Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson has lost the all-time record for Champions League wins after Real Madrid thrashed Celtic 5-1. Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti has now taken the accolade from him by claiming his 103rd win in the competition, surpassing the Scotsman’s 102.
Ferguson spent 27 years in the United hot seat claiming 38 major trophies including the Champions League twice. He won 102 matches as a manager in the competition a record which had stood since his retirement, with his final win coming away at Braga in November 2012.
It looked as if he had set a tricky precedent to beat but he has now been surpassed by Ancelotti. Madrid’s win over Celtic earlier today was his 103rd in the competition finally surpassing the success that the United boss had.
Ancelotti also holds the record for most Champions League trophies ever won, with the Italian is the only manager to have ever won the tournament on four occasions with Bob Paisley and Zinedine Zidane just behind with three.
Ancelotti’s win record may not stand for long with the 63-year-old in his twilight years in management. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has already won 96 and is likely to continue in the dugout for a longer spell than the Italian.
