Those who are not sure if they are entitled to a discount can contact their local council. The Government website has a tool where a person can put in their postcode and find out who their local council is, and to whom they will pay their council tax.

Adults who live on their own in their home can get a 25 percent discount on their bill, while some people who live in a property are not counted when calculating a household’s bill.

If everyone who lives in a property is disregarded, the council tax bill will have a 50 percent discount.

People are encouraged to contact their council if someone has moved out and so they are entitled to a discount.

Who is disregarded from a council tax bill?

A person is disregarded if they are aged under 18, they are aged 18 or 19 and someone is entitled to Child Benefit for them, or they are 18 or 19 and were still in education on April 30.

A person will also be disregarded if they are a full-time student on a degree level or postgraduate course, or a person aged 19 or under on a course before degree level, such as A levels.

An individual may also be disregarded if they’re related to a student and they aren’t a British citizen themselves.

Long-term hospital patients and care home residents are also disregarded for council tax bills as are those staying in a hostel or night shelter.

Prisoners or someone in detention awaiting deportation are also disregarded as well as those living in a bail or probation hostel.

People with a permanent health condition are also disregarded for council tax bills – they will need a doctor’s certificate to verify this.

They must also be claiming one of the following benefits:

  • Universal Credit with limited capability for work or work related activity
  • Employment Support Allowance
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Standard or enhanced rate of the daily living component of Personal Independence Payment
  • Middle or higher rate care component of Disability Living Allowance

  • Income Support including a disability premium due to incapacity for work
  • If a person hosts people under the ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme, they’re disregarded for council tax.

DON’T MISS

There will be no council tax to pay on the annexe if a dependent family member lives there. This applies if they are aged 65 or over and have a physical or mental disability.

If the annexe is empty, there will be no need to pay council tax on it.

A reduction may be available if a disabled person lives in the property. A person will need to prove a disabled person lives at the property.

The property must also have either an extra kitchen or bathroom to meet the needs of a disabled person, an extra room mainly used by the disabled person, or enough indoor space for the disabled person to use their wheelchair.
