Avatar’s Brendan Cowell ‘didn’t have to look too far’ for evil inspiration in real world | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

Brendan Cowell, 47, plays Mick Scoresby, the captain of a marine hunting vessel on the fantastical planet of Pandora, in James Cameron’s Avatar sequel. The Australian actor also revealed the touching backstory he had created for his character, as he spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk.

At the film’s world premiere in London last week, Brendan chuckled when asked if there were any real people he had based his villainous character on.

He shared: “You don’t have to look too far these days.

“Scoresby could represent a lot of things that are bad about the world right now: the disregard for what’s beneath us, what’s all around us.

“This movie’s probably a love letter to the environment and Scoresby will be making sure the letter doesn’t get in the post for want of a better metaphor.”

“This guy had a bit of loss in his life, but he has the wind in his hair and is out there living Moby Dick style on the edge.

“He’s there and just taking what he can for himself so it’s kind of just owning that.”

He noted there’s many people in the “greedy human world” currently living out this narrative for themselves.

Brendan added he was “happy to take one for the team” if that meant providing a more realistic antagonist for the film.

As one of the few human characters in the film, Brendan also didn’t have to undergo the now infamous water training that the Na’vi actors had to endure.

He joked that training for him simply meant: “Enjoying the catering, going up on the boat and yelling at people.”

Brendan conceded that he did have some actual training to use the harpoon gun.

“I can’t complain on this one” the actor admitted, noting that “learning how to breathe underwater” must be vastly harder.
