Apple launched the latest Apple Watch models along with its latest iPhone 14 lineup a few months ago. Apple Watch got its separate GPS support with the Series 2 which was released six years ago. Yet, the Apple Watch models since then have been dependent upon iPhone’s GPS whenever possible. However, this is set to change with the latest round of Apple Watch models. Apple has updated its support page to state that the three latest smartwatch models (Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2 and Apple Watch Ultra) will now use their built-in GPS even when the iPhone is nearby. According to the company older Apple Watch models used to rely on the GPS from iPhones (when available) to preserve their battery life.
Apple Watch GPS performance improved
Apple Watch Ultra’s in-built GPS doesn’t need to rely on iPhones as has a bigger battery than Apple Watch Series 8 and claims to offer at least twice the runtime. Meanwhile, Apple Watch Series 8 and SE 2’s hardware hasn’t much changed from the Series 7 models, yet it supports independent GPS. The GPS independency feature can be one more reason for users to upgrade to the latest Apple Watch models.
Moreover, the very first Apple devices that are equipped with dual-band GPS frequency are — iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, and Apple Watch Ultra. This new addition has also improved the Apple Watch GPS performance, especially for the Apple Watch Ultra. The dual-band GPS frequency offers better location data in major cities that have dense obstructions.

Apple Watch GPS support: Evolution
In 2015, when the Cupertino-based tech giant released the original Apple Watch, it was completely dependent on the iPhone for GPS. This remained the same with the Apple Watch Series 1 which debuted the following year. Apple Watch Series 2 was the first smartwatch model to support in-built GPS.
As explained above, these older Apple Watch models used to access iPhone’s GPS data when possible to preserve the battery life. Starting with Apple Watch 2, the company’s smartwatches started activating its in-built GPS only when the watch was out of range from the iPhone.
