Japanese Video Game Company Had Plans to Introduce a Second-Generation Version of the Beloved Console

Following a disappointing run with the Wii U in the early 2010s, Nintendo made a huge jump when it released the Switch in 2017. The Nintendo Switch became one of the company’s best-selling consoles. Now, five years later, we’re still talking about it with no sight of a successor arriving anytime soon.

Following the Switch’s release, we received a couple of updated models in the Switch Lite and the Switch OLED model. We haven’t heard much about a generational update to the console that will power future handheld titles. However, according to Digital Foundry’s John Linneman, Nintendo had some plans to develop an update for the Switch.

In a recent episode of the Digital Foundry Direct Weekly, Linneman shared that he had chats with several game developers about a mid-generation update for the Nintendo Switch. He further stated that Nintendo had internally planned to develop a new model. However, the idea has since been canned.

Linneman believed that Nintendo’s plans for its next console will most likely be the long-awaited generational leap for the Nintendo Switch. However, he clarified that the new console won’t arrive next year.

So far, Nintendo hasn’t really upgraded the Switch with its recent updates. The OLED model only had an upgraded screen, and there were no improvements to the internals. With the next Switch model, fans are hoping to see a massive leap that will vastly improve their handheld gaming experience.

However, like Linneman mentioned during his talk, Nintendo will be more wary than ever, as they fear making a flop successor just like they did with the Wii U for the Wii back in 2012.
