If you asked anime fans outside Japan what their favourite shows are from 2022, you will find titles such as Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family, and Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2 quite high on their lists.
However, according to Japanese anime website AnimeAnime.jp (thanks, Crunchyroll) which released the results of its annual survey of the top TV anime of the year, anime watchers in the home country of Japan have different answers.
The website conducts user surveys every year asking about the top anime films and shows. This year, a record 8,271 people participated in the survey, with a greater representation of females (42.5%) and a younger demographic, with 44.2% of respondents being under the age of 19. The survey was conducted between December 1 and December 12, 2022.
According to the results, the original TV anime Lycoris Recoil came out on top, beating out fan favourites like Spy x Family and Bocchi the Rock! Other top contenders in the survey included Chainsaw Man, Dropkick on My Devil! X, My Hero Academia Season 6, and Blue Lock. The full top 10 list is as follows:

Lycoris Recoil even got the thumbs up from video game legend Hideo Kojima, who accidentally stumbled upon the anime while searching for the film Coda. Kojima ended up loving the Shingo Adachi-directed series, and recommended his followers to check it out. Kojima’s praises got so much traction that his comments even ended up getting printed on Lycoris Recoil’s spinoff light novel.
