Christian Horner has bigged up Red Bull’s decision to make its own power units for 2026, justifying Ferrari’s concerns over the team’s move. Horner claimed the move to build its own engines gives the team “control of our own destiny” in a major coup for the reigning champions.
He also stressed the team was on its “own path” after talks with Porsche fell through last Autumn. Horner told RacingNews365: “We’ve explored possibilities beyond 2025, but the reality is it all needs to be under one roof
“We’ve made the investment, we’ve made the commitment within Red Bull Powertrains, and we’ve recruited the specialists. Our journey as a power unit manufacturer and independent engine facility is unchanged by Honda’s possibility that they may come back into the sport in 2026.
“We’ve set our path, we’ve made the commitment, we’re making the investment and, longer term, that’s absolutely the right decision, because it gives us control of our own destiny.

F1 had set a deadline of October 15 for power unit suppliers to sign up for the 2026 rules. However, this was extended after Audi were the only constructor to sign up to the terms.
At the latest deadline, all teams agreed except Ferrari in what could be a major blow to the sport’s bosses. A Ferrari spokesperson said the team had “no answer” as to when the situation could be resolved.
