In a good news for Indian Premier League (IPL) fans in India, telecom giant Jio is reportedly planning to live stream the upcoming season of IPL 2023 in India for free. As per reports, after the mega success of FIFA World Cup, Reliance now plans to apply a similar kind of strategy for IPL 2023.

According to a recent report, Viacom18, the digital rights holder of the IPL 2023, may air IPL season free on the Jio app. Viacom18, a Reliance venture, is working on multiple strategies to capture the leadership in live sports streaming market. The company plans to garner 500+ million subscribers during the 75-days tournament.

Last year Viacom18 had purchased the IPL media rights for the 2023-2027 season for Rs 23,758 crore, which amounts to Rs 50 crore per match.

As per a Business Standard report, the company is planning “to broadcast IPL in regional languages, bundling free IPL viewing with Jio telecom subscription packages or allowing users with rival mobile plans to access some form of free broadcast on JioCinema.”

Viacom18 also plans to garner a major portion of free-dish homes to corner its main rival in the DTH category, Disney+Hotstar, which holds the DTH rights to the IPL. The free IPL streaming may not only bring more viewers for Jio but may also bring a telecom-like disruption and make a dent in its competitor’s viewership.

IPL 2023 will feature ten teams. The 10 teams of IPL 2023 are Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants, and Kolkata Knight Riders. All 10 teams will play 18 games each. Every team will play one home game and one away game.

Recently, Viacom18′ strategy to offer the Fifa World Cup 2022 free paid off as the digital viewership of the World Cup event surpassed TV viewership for the first time in India.”The possibilities of growing the IPL digital viewership are massive, considering the fact that the TV and digital rights are with different players,” an executive had said after the success of Fifa World cup.

Viacom18 clocked ad revenue of over Rs 300 crore from the Fifa tournament.
