Star Indian athlete Dutee Chand has been suspended after testing positive for using prohibited anabolic steroids during an out-of-competition testing. Dutee won a silver medal in 100 meter and 200 meter women’s race in the 2018 Asian Games. Dutee also won Bronze in 2013, 2017 and 2019 at the Asian Championships. In 2019, she became the first Indian woman sprinter to win gold at a Universiade, winning it in the 100 m event.

World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) report confirmed that the sprinter’s A-sample has been tested positive in ‘Adverse Analytical Finding’. In the next step, Chand may file an appeal and place a request for a test of her ‘B’ sample.

The prohibitive substances found in Dutee’s urine samples are SARS S4 Andarine, O Dephenylandarine, SARMS (ENBOSARM) (OSTARINE) and LIGANDROL Metabolite.

Dutee has been tested positive for Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs), part of therapeutic compounds that have similar anabolic properties to anabolic steroids.

What are anabolic steroids?
Anabolic steroids stimulate muscle tissue to grow and “bulk up” in response to training by mimicking the effect of naturally produced testosterone on the body. Anabolic steroids can remain in the body anywhere from a couple of days to about a year.

Why athletes use anabolic steroids?

This type of steroid is used to repair body tissues and to increase appetite and the growth of muscles. Anabolic steroids are made in the laboratory from testosterone (a male hormone). These drugs might lower the damage that happens to muscles during a hard workout. That could help athletes bounce back faster from a workout. They might be able to exercise harder and more often.
