TL;DR

  • An APK teardown has revealed a new video unblur feature.
  • The teardown also uncovered video overlay effects.
  • Neither feature appears to be functional yet.

One of the big selling points of the Pixel 7 series was Google’s Photo Unblur feature. Now that we’re on our way to the Pixel 8, what new feature will the company tout for its next phone? It looks like we may have just got the answer through an APK teardown.

Before we go any further, it’s necessary to point out that an APK teardown reveals lines of code that suggest potential future features. There’s no guarantee that Google will publically roll out these features.

With that said, it appears that Google is currently developing a tool that can make videos cleaner and sharper, just like how the Pixel 7’s Photo Unblur feature cleans up blurry photos. According to 9to5Google, they were able to forcibly enable the UI for this Video Unblur tool on their own devices. However, it looks like the feature is not functional yet.

Similar to how Photo Unblur is exclusive for Pixel handsets, it’s possible that Google may be planning on making Video Unblur also exclusive. Although nothing in the code suggests that the feature is solely tied to Pixel phones.

In addition to Video Unblur, overlay effects were discovered in the code as well. Unfortunately, this feature also appears to be non-functional too, but the UI is there.

The UI reveals 14 video effects that include:

  • After School
  • B&W
  • Chromatic
  • Forward
  • Glassy
  • Golden
  • Moire
  • Multiply
  • Polaroid
  • Rainbow Rays
  • Reflect
  • RGB Pulse
  • Super 8
  • VHS

It’s probably safe to assume that these will apply filter-like effects to your video. For instance, B&W will likely turn the video black and white and Polaroid will make the video look like a Polaroid photo.
