ChatGPT creator admits AI could ‘kill’ many jobs

Sam Altman, in more than one way, is the man of the hour. OpenAI, which was started by Altman, has taken the world by storm, thanks to ChatGPT. The use of AI has never been this mainstream and Altman has had some role to play in it. Is artificial a threat to jobs? Or to be more specific, can technology like ChatGPT end up killing jobs for many people? So far, there has been much conjecture over the matter. Altman, CEO, OpenAI, has something to say on the matter. In an interview with ABC News, Altman said that advancements in AI would lead to many people losing their jobs. However, he also said that it also gives an opportunities for better jobs to come up. “We can have a much higher quality of life, standard of living. People need time to update, to react, to get used to this technology,” he told ABC News.
He also cited the example of how AI language models are being used as “co-pilots” for programmers. Altman said that OpenAI has plans to do that for every profession.

‘Scared’ over the use of AI

However, it seems like Altman is actually ‘scared’ of AI as well. In an interview, Altman admitted that the misuse of AI does scare him.
Altman said that, “We do worry a lot about authoritarian governments developing this.” He further said that the potential of AI and how it is used will reflect the “collective power, and creativity, and will of humanity.” But he is worried about what happens when authoritarian regimes end up developing AI technology that competes with the ‘good’ AI. He said that models like ChatGPT could be “used for large-scale disinformation.” Also, since these languages are getting good at writing codes, Altman feels that some could use it for offensive cyberattacks as well.
