Charlie Simpson has been all over the news this week due to the return of his legendary band, Busted – but that’s not all he’s been up to. This week, Simpson confirmed he has also recorded a new song with Gunship behind the scenes.

Last year, Express.co.uk broke the news that Gunship, the enigmatic electronic band, had finished “24 tracks” of new music. Singer Alex Westaway revealed the band would be releasing these songs across two albums in the near future.

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Simpson revealed he is back for a sequel to Tech Noir.

When asked about working with Gunship again, Simpson confirmed: “Yeah, I’m singing on Tech Noir 2.”

After being pressed about the track, Simpson continued: “It’s really cool, man. It’s actually… do you know what? It’s actually my favourite one we’ve done. It’s really good.”

He added that he had only heard a mix of the completed song “a few weeks ago” before revealing he first sang the track “in lockdown”.

Simpson could not confirm when Gunship would be releasing their highly-anticipated third album, however.

He said: “They’re taking quite a while to get it through. They like to take their time.”

Gunship – which is made up of Westaway, Alex Gingell, and Dan Haigh – previously featured Simpson on their single, Tech Noir, alongside visionary director John Carpenter. The track was taken from their self-titled debut album.

Both Haigh and Westaway made up the rock band Fightstar alongside Simpson. After Fightstar went on their first hiatus in 2010, Westaway and Haigh started Gunship, and later released their first album (Gunship) in 2015. Their sophomore record, Dark All Day, hit streaming services in 2018. Since then, the band have released a few singles, but no official word has come about the synthwave stars’ third album.
