This macOS app lets users share files between Android and Mac wirelessly: Details

Google recently rolled out its Nearby Share app in beta on Windows. The app allows users to wirelessly transfer files, folders, photos, videos, documents, etc between Android devices and Windows PCs. It seems that someone has ported the Nearby Share for macOS as well.
9to5Google has reported that a developer named Grishka has developed an app called NearDrop for macOS which basically looks like the ported version of Google’s Nearby Share app from Windows. The NearDrop app, as expected, allows users to transfer files between Android devices and Apple computers wirelessly.
The app is like Apple AirDrop but for Android and macOS and is a third-party app. The app is said to offer easy-to-share files between Mac, Android phones, tablets and Chromebook using Nearby Share. However, according to the report, NearDrop worked one way for transferring files from Android phones to macOS.
However, there are some trade-offs. For instance, the NearDrop always keeps the discovery settings to ‘Visible to everyone’. This means the macOS is always discoverable and anyone can share anything without any necessary permission that puts the device’s security at risk.
As per the documentation shared, changing the discovery mode requires a Google server and that’s currently not available for the NearDrop app. Also, it does not let users share files and data from macOS devices.
In addition to this, the app works on Wi-Fi mode only, as per the report. That means, users will be required to keep both the smartphone and Mac connected to the same Wi-Fi network to be able to transfer files.
However, the biggest risk behind using the NearDrop app is that the app is not recognised by both Apple and Google. So, it may put the device’s security at risk along with the data stored in it.
