Tesco: Supermarket launches new way of paying for millions of customers

Shoppers will no longer need to pay for their groceries with cash or card. Instead, Tesco has launched Clubcard Pay+, a new pre-payment debit card provided by Tesco Bank.

Tesco has said it has come up with a new way for over 20 million shoppers to pay for food without using cash or card.

They can now use Tesco Clubcard Pay+ instead.

All customers need to do is apply online to get the new service on their smartphones.

They can then add money and ringfence their grocery spend from any UK bank into their Tesco Clubcard Pay+ account.

It lets shoppers save while they shop by rounding up their expenses to the nearest pound, before saving the difference into a Round Up account.

The new payment method was first launched as a trial in March 2021.

It was used only by Tesco staff, but almost 45,000 accounts have been opened since.

Users have spent more than £24million on 1.2 million transactions using Clubcard Pay+ in Tesco as well as in other retailers.

Shoppers typically receive one Clubcard point for every £1 spent on groceries in Tesco, or one point for every £2 spent on fuel.

In return, each point is worth 1p each, meaning for every 500 points a customer receives, they’ll accumulate £5 to spend.

Anyone can apply for the Clubcard Pay+ scheme, but they must reside in the UK and be aged 18 or over.

Tesco Bank’s chief executive, Gerry Mallon, commented on the new paying method. He said: “We’re very encouraged to see Tesco Clubcard Pay+ help give shoppers the confidence to start saving while managing their budget and picking up extra Clubcard Points wherever they shop.”
