Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp sends title race message to Man City after Reds’ Brentford win | Football | Sport
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists his charges “will go for everything” and are not giving up in the Premier League title race despite Manchester City’s double-digit lead at the summit. The defending champions are 11 points clear but the Reds can move within eight of Pep Guardiola’s side if they win their game in hand, after beating Brentford 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday.
In their first Premier League match since 2017 without either Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah, goals from Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Takumi Minamino took Liverpool to the three points.
It was a welcome way to bounce back from a three-game winless streak in the league which has allowed City to climb clear.
Guardiola’s side swept aside Chelsea at the Etihad on Saturday thanks to Kevin De Bruyne’s strike which saw them put one hand on the title they are looking to defend.
Liverpool have a game in hand against Leeds United, a match which was postponed on Boxing Day, which could shorten the gap to City.
But Reds boss Klopp insists even though their rivals, who have won the league in three of the last four seasons bar 2019-20 when Liverpool were champions, have a comfortable points gap, his players will not concede defeat.
Speaking post-match, Klopp said when asked about challenging City for the title: “We don’t have to convince those outside [the club]. If they want to believe, they will.
“If you are with us, you will enjoy the ride and we will go for everything. We try to do our part, the rest we have nothing to do with it.”
