Australian NBA player Joe Ingles looks set for a lengthy period on the sidelines, after appearing to suffer a serious knee injury.

During the second quarter of Utah’s loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Ingles drove to the basket but slipped awkwardly and clutched at his left knee as the crowd fell into a hush.

Game announcers and fellow players immediately feared the worst, as Ingles was helped to the locker room.

Ingles will return to Salt Lake City, where’s he’s set to have an MRI tomorrow.

“Hopefully it’s not as bad as it looks,” assistant coach Alex Jensen said afterwards. Jensen is filling in as the head coach while Quin Snyder is in COVID protocols.

Coming off a brilliant campaign at the Tokyo Olympics, Ingles is averaging 7.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game for the Jazz.

The 34-year-old is a key cog in Utah’s rotation, who currently sit fourth in the western conference with a 30-20 record.
