The Manchester United striker has been sent home on bail, the Greater Manchester Police force have confirmed. A short statement on Wednesday morning via GMP outlined that Greenwood has returned home after several days in police custody.

The statement read: ‘A 20-year-old man arrested (on Sunday 30 January 2022) on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation.’

Earlier in the week allegations had been made against Greenwood by a woman, who released a series of images and recordings on social media in which Greenwood was alleged to have caused her harm.

GMP quickly intervened and Greenwood was taken in for questioning, after being arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.

It was later confirmed that Greenwood had been further arrested on ‘suspicion of assault and threats to kill.’

Manchester United have suspended the youngster and confirmed he will be taking no part in training or match day activities until all investigations have been completed.

A statement from the club read: “We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.”

Greenwood has also had his sponsorship deal with USA sports giants Nike suspended as a result of the ongoing police investigation.

In 2019, Greenwood entered the record books after becoming the youngest footballer to play for Utd in the Champions League when he took the pitch aged 17.

Greenwood has made 129 appearances in total for the Red Devils and netted 35 goals along the way.

In 2020, England manager Gareth Southgate handed the youngster his first international cap when Greenwood came off the bench in a 1-0 win against Iceland.

The knock-on effects of the allegations have been widely felt this week.

It emerged that Greenwood had been unfollowed by several of his United team-mates on social media.

Cristiano Ronaldo, among others, are now no longer listed among the followers of the 20-year-old striker.

All merchandise from the Manchester United official club store bearing Greenwood’s name or image has also been removed from retail while investigations continue.
