HBO’s The Last of Us Outbreak Day Could Be Years Before The Game

It looks like The Last of Us TV series will be altering its Outbreak Day from 2013 to ten years previously and with it, bringing the post-apocalyptic events even closer.

It’s the year that every The Last of Us fan has been waiting for and it looks as though HBO is set to make their dive into the popular post-apocalyptic Naughty Dog game one to remember.

Even though we have yet to see an official trailer, there has been plenty of behind the scenes sneak peeks of goings-on that has kept our eagerness at an all-time high. As we inch closer and production is back on the cards after the holiday break, it seems as though some changes have been made to The Last of Us‘ timeline.

The Outbreak Timeline

If you’re unfamiliar or have simply forgotten how The Last of Us game’s timeline occurred, let me freshen that up a bit for you. Outbreak Day is the date that the Cordyceps brain infection hit the city of Austin, Texas in the wee hours of the morning on September 26th, 2013.

Though the infection had been rising in intensity for days, it reached a critical point when people began to be admitted to hospitals. The infection spread quickly, eventually being confirmed to have spread nationwide, with hundreds of infected people then running around the streets attacking people and infecting more in the process.

HBO’s The Last of Us Outbreak Time Change

In a post on Reddit, taken from @NaughtyDogInfo via Twitter, it states that the year of the Outbreak has been changed from 2013 to 2003 for the HBO show, placing the show in 2023 instead of 2033.

In an image posted on the Twitter account, it shows an HBO poster outlining that the Outbreak will apparently take place in 2003 as opposed to the original date in the game. The fan account also backs up this evidence in the thread with an image of a set piece from the show showcasing a ‘Biomedical Sciences Conference’ dated 2003.

Although there’s a host of reasons that HBO could have decided to do this, fans have their own theory. Reddit user u/Dev-F believes the reason could actually be that it’s simply down to getting older cars and props from twenty years ago than from ten years ago would be much easier and work in harmony with the post-apocalyptic environment better.

Whatever the reason for the apparent time shift, I’m confident that it will tie in well and provide fantastic viewing for fans. Although, if you were hoping to spot some PS3’s lying around like in the game, you might just be a little disappointed. This will probably also dash our hopes of hearing a rendition of ‘Future Days’ by Joel.

HBO’s The Last of Us is set to premiere at some stage this year so stay tuned.
