Kate Middleton: Duchess wore ‘simple’ £15,000 earrings for her wedding to William

The Duchess of Cambridge left the world in awe when she walked down the aisle on April 29 2011. Lorna Haddon, head of diamonds and jewellery at Beaverbrooks, explained how Kate carried a piece of home with her on her wedding day.

Brides, royal and otherwise, are often encouraged to wear ‘something blue’ on their special day.

According to Lorna, Kate Middleton’s ‘something blue’ was “firmly covered by that incredible sapphire engagement ring”, which previously belonged to Princess Diana.

The astonishingly beautiful 12ct Ceylon sapphire took pride of place on the bride’s finger, a family heirloom with great sentimental value.

It was originally inherited by Prince Harry, but in a gesture of brotherly love, he gave it to Prince William when he announced his plan to propose to Kate.

Atop her head, the Duchess of Cambridge wore the Cartier Halo Tiara.

Lorna stated that this was “borrowed from none other than the Queen herself”.

Not only dazzling, the tiara was “stooped in royal history”, having been “gifted to Her Majesty as an 18th-birthday present by George VI in the 1930s”.

With the royal bride wearing items connecting her to Prince William’s family, it would only make sense that Kate would wear something that connected her to her own.

DON’T MISS

The elegant and dainty drop earrings Kate opted for were given to her by her parents ahead of her wedding day.

Lorna commented: “She kept her jewellery choices for the big day very simple (as simple as can be when you’re wearing a royal tiara!)

“She teamed the headpiece with a gorgeous pair of pear-cut diamond drop earrings gifted to her by her parents for her wedding day – an equally sentimental piece for her to walk down the aisle with.”

While the earrings were simple and far from outlandish, they weren’t exactly inexpensive, and cost £15,000.

But for brides-to-be and Kate Middleton fans, it is possible to recreate the royal look on a budget.

Lorna stated: “For those looking to recreate this simple, elegant look, I’d opt for [Beaverbrooks’] 9ct White Gold Cubic Zirconia Pear Drop Earrings (£425).”

Hello Magazine reported: “The Robinson Pelham earrings were from Carole and Michael Middleton, and were designed to look like the Middleton family’s coat of arms featuring oak leaves and acorns.”

But it wasn’t just her wedding that Kate sparkled in beautiful jewellery.

According to Lorna, Kate opted for another classic pair of earrings on another extremely important day in her life.

When Prince George was born, Kate was pictured with her husband and son outside the hospital, wearing some quintessential earrings.

Lorna stated: “Kate’s signature style just shines through in their first photoshoot as a new family – her trademark pearl earrings are so classic and really convey her sophisticated motherly image.

“She’s worn these drop pearl earrings for so many special moments in her life, including following the birth of her daughter, Princess Charlotte.”

The Duchess of Cambridge is a style icon whose iconic pieces can be recreated via the high street by Kate fans.
