The Minotaur’s labyrinth is also said to have been built on the island underneath the castle.

One of the island’s most beautiful beaches is Elafonissi, known for its gorgeous pink sand coastline.

The magical beach is about a mile long and has many small coves including some naturist spots.

Another of Crete’s top rated beaches is the stunning Balos Lagoon which attracts many tourists every year.

Although the beach is stunningly beautiful, access is tricky and it is not advised for tourists who are afraid of heights.

However, after a nerve wracking drive and walk to the beach, visitors are rewarded with crystal clear waters and incredible views.

A trip to Crete wouldn’t be complete without sampling a few of the local culinary delicacies.

Brave Britons can try ‘chochlioi boubouristi’ or fried snails doused in wine or vinegar while Cretan cheese pies are the perfect portable beach snack.

At the end of a long day, tourists can enjoy a sip of raki or tsikoudia, a strong traditional brandy.

Fully vaccinated British tourists currently need a negative PCR or antigen test to travel to Greece.
