The popularity of baby names has changed over time, with many classic names dying out in favour of more modern monikers. However, some have managed to hold their own, and have remained in the top 10 list of most loved baby names year after year.

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) collects data on the names of registered babies each year to determine which names are proving to be fashionable, and which are dying out.

With a fresh year ahead of us, there is plenty of time for new trends to emerge when it comes to names.

Later this year, the data surrounding the most popular names of the last year (2021) will be released, however for now the most recent data available is for 2020.

Though plenty of typically gendered male and female names have stayed at the top of the list, the ONS notes that more gender-neutral names are also coming into vogue.

Mothers aged 35 years and over appear to choose “more traditional names”, while younger mothers opted “for more modern and shortened names”.

Siân Bradford, from the ONS vital statistics outputs branch, said: “We continue to see the age of mothers having an impact on the choice of baby name.

“Archie jumped into the top 10 boys’ names for the first time, driven by younger mothers as well as the obvious Royal link.

“While on the girls’ side Ivy rose to sixth place.”
