Bengals QB hurts knee in Super Bowl, won’t need surgery

Joe Burrow suffered a knee injury during Super Bowl 56. He didn’t miss any snaps because of the injury and as expected, it isn’t a serious one.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Burrow’s knee injury was a “sprain,” but it won’t require surgery.

Again, this isn’t a major surprise. Burrow didn’t miss a snap during the Super Bowl and declined treatment from the athletic trainers after suffering the injury.

Nonetheless, this is good news for the Bengals, as it means Burrow should be full strength relatively early during the offseason. The team has plenty of time to monitor the injury before training camp begins in late July, too.

Additionally, the knee injury that Burrow suffered during the Super Bowl was in his right leg. That is important given that Burrow suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during the 2020 NFL season. Any injury to his left knee could have aggravated that issue, so Cincinnati has to be thankful that it’s his other knee that got slightly banged up this time.

Burrow won the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year for 2021 after returning from that torn left ACL. He shouldn’t have a problem returning from this injury and playing at a high level for the Bengals once again.

Burrow completed a league-high 70.4 percent of his passes for 4,611 yards, 34 touchdowns and 14 interceptions during 16 regular-season starts in 2021. He added 1,105 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions to his totals during the postseason and posted a combined record of 13-7 in his 20 total games.
