A Galaxy S22 series rival?

Motorola’s Edge series of flagships has been around since 2020, offering plenty of power and big batteries. Now, the company is back with the Motorola Edge Plus 2022, and it looks to continue this trend.

The Edge Plus 2022 serves up the brand-new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, being Qualcomm’s latest and greatest chipset yet. The SoC is paired with 8GB or 12GB of RAM, and 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of expandable storage. This all powers a 6.7-inch FHD+ OLED screen with a 144Hz refresh rate.

Motorola suggested in a press release that this is a rebranded Moto Edge X30 that launched in China late last year. However, this model differs from the Chinese variant by offering a 4,800mAh battery with 30W wired charging instead of a 5,000mAh battery with 68W wired charging.

In addition to 30W wired top-ups, the Motorola Edge Plus 2022 also packs 15W wireless charging and 5W reverse wireless charging. Thankfully, unlike Samsung, the 30W charger is bundled with the phone.

What else should you expect?

Switching to the cameras, you’re getting a 50MP main shooter (f/1.8, one-micron pixel size, OIS), a 50MP ultrawide lens (f/2.2, 0.64-micron pixels, 114-degree field-of-view), and a 2MP depth sensor. Unfortunately, you aren’t getting a telephoto lens here. Switch to the front and you’ll find a 60MP selfie camera in a punch-hole cutout.

Other notable features include Android 12, Bluetooth 5.2, IP52 splash resistance (no IP67 or IP68 rating here), the Ready For desktop functionality, stereo speakers, and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity. Motorola is also offering a stylus accessory that’s either available as an optional purchase or as part of a bundle, depending on the region.

Unfortunately, Motorola told Android Authority that it’s promising “at least” two years of OS updates and three years of bi-monthly security updates. That’s the standard update promise in years gone by but it’s now way behind Google, OnePlus, and Samsung.

Motorola Edge Plus 2022 pricing and availability

The Motorola Edge Plus 2022 will be available in North America at a promotional price of $899.99 (normally $999.99) via Amazon, Best Buy, and Motorola’s website. The phone will also be available via Boost, Republic Wireless, and Verizon in the “coming months.”

Interestingly enough, the phone will also be available in the likes of Asia, Europe, India, Latin America, and the Middle East under the Motorola Edge 30 Pro moniker.

Regardless of the region, the phone will be available in Cosmos Blue and Stardust White colorways.

Nevertheless, at its promotional price of $900, it’s right in between the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus. You do get a higher resolution ultrawide camera, a larger battery, and a higher refresh rate, but you also miss out on full-fledged water resistance, newer Gorilla Glass protection, and a dedicated telephoto camera.

What do you think of the Motorola Edge Plus 2022?
