ComicConnect is running a stunning auction of original comic book artwork going under the hammer today. That includes a number of pieces of work by Jim Starlin, including a rather notable cover that has been piling on the bids.

After leaving the Navy as a photographer Jim Starlin began his career in comic books where he enjoyed success as both a writer and artist. For over 40 years he’s been known for his space opera-esque stories where he created popular characters such as Thanos, Drax, Starfox and Gamora. His most notable works include Iron Man, Adam Warlock and creating The Infinity Gauntlet. Now let’s take a look at that first cover…

Starlin, Jim – MARVEL FEATURE (1971-73) #12 Cover Jim Starlin pencils/John Romita inks; cover; 1973; image size 10″ x 15″ The Thing and Iron Man vs. the Blood Brothers! This is an extraordinary Marvel Feature cover by Starlin and Romita, a classic issue that shows The Thing and Iron Man facing off against The Blood Brothers. This cover displays Starlin’s affinity for the grotesque, making him the perfect artist to depict The Blood Brothers. “So many Gen Xers and Boomers remember this cover vividly. Something about The Blood Brothers ganging up on The Thing with Iron Man swooping in to save the day is incredibly nostalgic,” opined ComicConnect COO Vincent Zurzolo. Pen and ink. Art is in excellent condition; the title and other paste-ups are original.
