Two ugly marking contests marred the first half of Brisbane’s clash with Collingwood at The Gabba.

Collingwood forward Mason Cox’s marking technique left a lot to be desired when he jumped knee-first into the back of an opponent.

It was during the second quarter of their clash with Brisbane at The Gabba when the Magpies kicked the ball inside their forward 50 in the direction of the key forward.

The pass fell short and Lions defender Brandon Starcevich went up to take the intercept mark.

But Cox – who did not even attempt to get a hand near the ball – leapt off the ground and aimed his knee straight at the back of his opponent.

Lions star in strife for ugly hit

Starcevich was floored by the impact and lay on the ground in an obvious amount of pain.

Cox was penalised.

“I wouldn’t say it’s in the marking contest,” AFL legend Luke Hodge said in commentary.

“He had leapt (off the ground).”

Lions great Leigh Matthews couldn’t make an excuse for the Collingwood forward’s actions.

“The ball wasn’t within reach of Cox,” Matthews said.

Brisbane defender Darcy Gardiner was reported for his contact on young Pies player Josh Daicos.

Gardiner leapt into the back of Daicos and tucked his arm to dig his shoulder into his opponent.

“He’s going to miss a couple of weeks,” Hodge said.

“You could tell as soon as he did it, they’ve come in to push and shove and he just stood there, he didn’t argue.

“He knew he did the wrong thing there.”

The Lions survived a Collingwood comeback to win 15.8 (98) to 14.7 (91).
