Australian Test cricket captain Pat Cummins has ended his Indian Premier League season prematurely in a bid to recover from a niggly hip injury.

The 29-year-old has reportedly returned to Sydney to rest and start his recovery.

According to reports, Cummins is expected to be fit in time for Australia’s ODI and Test legs of next month’s tour of Sri Lanka.

It had already been announced the fast bowler would miss Australia’s three T20I matches to start the six-week tour.

Cummins confirmed his early IPL exit on Twitter on Friday night (AEST).

Cummins played five games for the Kolkata Knight Riders this season in which he had been managing the hip complaint.

In that time he scored the joint-fastest 50 in the tournament’s history and picked up seven wickets, including 3-22 in his last game against Mumbai Indians.

With the Knight Riders sixth on the table and unlikely to progress beyond the group stage, Cummins has chosen to prioritise Australia’s busy upcoming schedule.

His recovery is reportedly only expected to take a fortnight.
