The New Tab page in the Android version of the Google Chrome browser currently features multiple options that include — a search bar, the most frequently viewed websites and two content feed. Among these content feeds, one is the traditional Google Discover feed that shows a list of articles recommended for the user by the company’s algorithms. Meanwhile, the other feed comprises the latest posts from outlets that the user is “Following” in Chrome. It is important to note that the later feature is only limited to Android users. According to a report by 9to5Google, the tech giant is now working on a solution to remove the Discover feed from the New Tab Page on Chrome for Android users.
Difference between Chrome’s New Tab page on desktop and Android
Google Chrome’s New Tab Page on the desktop is far cleaner than the Android version. Some additional cards appear below the page on the desktop, however, it mainly focuses on the shortcuts and search. Users can also keep an eye out for an upcoming flag if they want more simplicity in their web browser. The report also suggests that the upcoming Feed ablation flag is coming soon to the chrome://flags page and a near-identical one will also be available for the iOS users.
What will this new flag do?
This new flag is likely to “remove all Feeds from Chrome,” including both the Discover and Following feed. The flag is now available for testing in Chrome Canary and the report claims that it is effective in cleaning up the New Tab Page. Google has not expressed its intentions for making the Discover feed an optional part of the Chrome New Tab Page. however, the report suggests that the flag is getting fast-tracked and should arrive with Chrome 103 next month.
Different ways to access Google Discover on Android devices
Users have many ways to access Google Discover on their Android phones and Google Chrome for Android is just one of them. Discover on Android can be accessed through the — homepage of the Google Search app, Chrome’s New Tab Page, the leftmost page of Pixel Launcher and the mobile version of Google.com. The report even mentions that the new flag appearing for iOS is also a bit strange as Chrome on iPhones already offers a simple toggle for the Discover feed.
