Supercars Townsville | Shane van Gisbergen angry after last lap clash with Anton De Pasquale

Shane van Gisbergen has swept both Supercars races in Townsville despite a last-corner tangle with Anton de Pasquale.

It was de Pasquale who crossed the line first, but a five-second penalty for the contact put him back to second.

Cameron Waters finished third for Tickford racing.

Van Gisbergen and de Pasquale made their final stop together on lap 61 of 88, with van Gisbergen emerging with a gap of about five seconds.

From there the gap slowly reduced, and was under a second at the start of the last lap.

Coming into the final corner, de Pasquale made a bold lunge from a long way back and punted the Red Bull ace square in the rear door, spinning him out of the lead.

De Pasquale slowed coming to the line in an effort to redress the move, but van Gisbergen elected to follow the Shell V-Power Racing Ford Mustang across the line to force officials to issue de Pasquale a penalty, which they did.

The pair had a big enough gap over third-placed Waters that the penalty still allowed de Pasquale to comfortably finish second.

After the race, van Gisbergen said he was angry about the clash, but respected the effort.

“He had a go, you have to respect that,” he said.

“We’ll have a chat later. I’m angry at the moment, but anyway. It is what it is.”

De Pasquale attempted to apologise in parc ferme but the championship leader brushed him off.

“I was catching him, had a dip, locked the fronts and spun him around,” de Pasquale said.

“I tried to give him back the position, but he was smarter than that. So play on, all good.”

De Pasquale’s teammate Will Davison finished a valiant seventh after an opening lap collision with Scott Pye took him out of contention.
