It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that Sridevi was a legend. There are many stars who have left a lasting impact on Indian cinema, but very few have come close to earning the iconic stature that Sridevi has. Having started her career as a child actor at the age of four, she went on to work in Bollywood and the South Indian film industries. Her first commercial hit was Himmatwala (1983), and then came her meteoric rise. The actress was dubbed the first female superstar of Bollywood, a title she claimed after a slew of hits and awards. In 2018, the actress passed away, a loss that is still mourned by her loved ones and fans alike. She has left a legacy of films for the next generation of actors to look up to, including her daughters, Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor. On the occasion of the late Sridevi’s birthday, we’re looking at 5 Sridevi Movies remake we’d love to see her daughter Janhvi Kapoor in:

Mr. India

Mr. India was one of the iconic forays into the science-fiction genre. The film, starring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi, won over audiences and the late actress was a huge part of its success. The actress played the mesmerising journalist Seema Sohni opposite Anil Kapoor’s Arun Verma. Among the many memorable parts of the film, the song Hawa Hawai, performed by Sridevi, became one of the reasons for the film’s success. And it was one of the highest-grossing flicks released in 1987. While a Mr. India remake by itself would be fun to watch, it will be interesting to see Janhvi Kapoor step into the role. The actress has worked in a film that relies on special effects before, with the recent film Roohi.

Sadma

Sridevi Movies - Sadma

Sadma is perhaps Sridevi’s finest performance. The Balu Mahendra directorial is an emotional ride, with the actress effectively tugging at audiences’ heartstrings. She was convincing as Reshmi, a young woman who suffers from retrograde amnesia after a traumatic car accident. Due to her condition, she thinks and acts like an eight-year-old. Sridevi’s performance was nothing short of phenomenal. The film opened to middling box office numbers in 1983 but was eventually recognised as a cult favourite. The role would make for great material for Janhvi Kapoor. In fact, in an interview with a leading news portal, the Dhadak actress revealed that she would love to star in the remake of Sadma as the film left her emotional.

Chandni

Sridevi Movies - Chandni

In the ’80s, Chandni came as one of the rare heroine-centric films. The romantic drama directed by Yash Chopra featured Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor, and Vinod Khanna. While the film boasted a star-studded cast, it was a Sridevi show through and through. The actress was so graceful and stunning as Chandni, that it was difficult to look away. In fact, her look in the film quickly became an obsession. It would be interesting to see Janhvi Kapoor take on an iconic role like Chandni and give it her own spin.

Chaalbaaz

Sridevi’s acting chops are put on full display here. The film saw the actress take on the double role of twin sisters Anju and Manju. One was a timid character, while the other was boisterous. They were complete opposites, and yet the actress inhabited both roles with ease. Her performance won her a Filmfare award in the Best Actress category. Janhvi Kapoor has only a few films under her belt, but she has already explored quite a range between Ghost Stories and Good Luck Jerry, so it would be interesting to see her take on a double role at some point in her career.

Himmatwala

Sridevi’s Himmatwala is often cited as the film that put Sridevi on the map as a mainstream heroine. The film, which was released in 1983, was a massive hit. It starred Sridevi alongside Jeetendra. It was also the start of a successful collaboration between Jeentendra and Sridevi. Apart from establishing an iconic pairing, the film also allowed Sridevi to showcase her dancing skills. And she truly was one of the best dancers, as seen in multiple films over the years. Just like her mother, Janhvi Kapoor is an amazing dancer, be it in films or on her social media handles. She never fails to impress. Apart from taking on her mother’s roles, it would be fun to watch her recreate some dance numbers as well.
