Newcastle plotting Scott McTominay transfer raid and Man Utd could eye swap deal | Football | Sport

Newcastle are plotting a transfer raid on Manchester United as they are reportedly interested in signing Scott McTominay. And the Red Devils could now eye up a swap deal to bring Magpies goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to Old Trafford in exchange for the 25-year-old midfielder.

Newcastle have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the new Premier League campaign after defeating Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend before securing draws with Brighton and Manchester City. The north east giants have already signed Sven Botman and Nick Pope this summer, as well as turning Matt Targett’s loan spell into a permanent deal. But they could be set to undertake more business before the transfer window closes next Thursday.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle want to sign McTominay if he is allowed to leave Old Trafford following the arrival of Casemiro, who joined the Red Devils from Real Madrid last week after they stumped up a staggering £70million to get their hands on the ace.

McTominay has been a regular starter for United over the last few seasons and has made 173 appearances for the club. But he has faced criticism for his performances at times – and Casemiro’s arrival could push the Scotland international down the pecking order.

Dubravka was Newcastle’s first-choice keeper under Eddie Howe last season and kept eight clean sheets in 26 Premier League appearances to help his side avoid relegation to the Championship. But the 33-year-old has lost his place to Pope this season and is yet to make an appearance.

The Slovakia international was expected to start Newcastle’s Carabao Cup clash with Tranmere on Wednesday night but was missing from the squad, with the club officially stating he was ill. And his absence could suggest a move is close.

Any swap deal could involve cash as well, with McTominay holding a higher market value than Dubravka. But both teams could be set to benefit if club chiefs do decide a swap deal is the best way forward.
