Meta may ask you to pay to use some features of WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram

For all the data collection, privacy issues, social media addiction and other issues, Facebook has one good thing: it has never made users pay for any service and it has always been free. Be it WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger — all the popular apps under the Meta umbrella have been free to use. However, it looks Meta — the parent company of all Facebook-owned apps — is considering making some features paid.
According to a report by The Verge, the Mark Zuckerberg-led company is setting a team to look for paid features that can be integrated in Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
The information is obtained through an internal memo which was sent to employees last week.
The new unit is expected to be spearheaded by Meta’s former Head of Research, Pratiti RayChoudhury and it will reportedly work on creating paid features for its popular social media platforms. The report adds that the company took the decision to set up the new division after its ads business was hurt by recent ad tracking changes done by Apple on iOS. The group created for the task is named as New Monetization Experiences.
In an interview with The Verge, Meta’s VP of monetization overseeing the group, John Hegeman, said, “I think we do see opportunities to build new types of products, features, and experiences that people would be willing to pay for and be excited to pay for.”
One major portion of Meta’s revenue came from ads. The company already offers some paid features across its apps, but until now it has not made its priority to charge users. But now Meta believes that paid features will become more meaningful for the business in the future. “On a five-year time horizon I do think it can really move the needle and make a pretty significant difference,” added Hegeman.
Meta is not the first platform which is coming up with paid features. Recently, both Twitter and Snapchat rolled out their paid subscription model for users.
