Speaking at the press conference, Hamilton said: “It’s never great when the season finishes early. Even when I’ve experienced having it finish early in places like Mexico.”

Verstappen can win the championship this weekend if he extends his advantage to 138 points. However, this will only be possible if Verstappen wins the race and both Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc struggle.

The Dutchman can be crowned champion if he outscores Perez by 13 points and Leclerc by 22 points. This is only possible if Leclerc finishes eighth or lower if Verstappen claims victory.

If successful, Verstappen will become the earliest F1 world champion for 20 years with still five races left to run. However, it is impossible for Verstappen to beat Michael Schumacher’s record this year as the German won the 2002 title with six races remaining.
