A-League news | Dwight Yorke by Macarthur FC axed over two-word sledge

It took just two words in an icy dressing room debrief to set off a chain reaction that ultimately led to Macarthur FC and Dwight Yorke parting ways.

Less than a day on from the side’s 1-0 loss to Adelaide United, the former Manchester United star was out the door.

It came after Yorke described his side as a “pub team” in a post-match address.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald sources, Yorke delivered the scathing assessment in front of the entire travelling team.

That included Macarthur chairman Gino Marra and its CEO Sam Krslovic, who were none too happy about the remark.

Marra reportedly tried to stop Yorke’s tirade, which was critical of professionalism and standards among the player group and the A-League in general.

The Herald reports Yorke targeted individuals and made the sledge in response to the team’s standing in sixth on the ladder.

A discussion followed between Yorke and the club’s management, at which point it was decided the parties would split effective immediately.

Yorke led the club to last year’s Australia Cup title, stating “I leave the football club with a great team that will continue to challenge for more silverware.”

In a statement to the Herald, the chairman declined to discuss the fracas.

“We won’t be commenting on the circumstances of the mutual agreement reached between the club and Dwight Yorke on Saturday,” Marra said.

“Our focus is only on the next chapter of the club and appointing a new coach who we hope will deliver more success to our supporters.

“We thank Dwight for his contribution to Macarthur FC and leading the club to the 2022 Australia Cup title.”

Yorke is reportedly in the frame to join Sydney FC as its coach.

Incumbent coach Steve Corica is supposedly in the firing line amid his team’s lacklustre run of seven losses from 13 matches.
