With the European Union making USB-C standard mandatory for mobile devices and the US also keen on bringing a similar rule, Apple has been under a lot of pressure to include a USB-C connection in the iPhone and ditching the Lightning connector altogether. The troubles seem to be only compounding for the tech giant on this front as another country, Brazil, is also doubling down on its efforts to force smartphone manufacturers to go for USB-C charging only when it comes to smartphones. As most Android smartphones already come with a USB-C charging port, the ones that do not, especially the iPhone, are under the scrutiny of Anatel, the Brazilian regulatory agency, as per a report by Tecnoblog.
Anatel has reportedly proposed new smartphone charging port requirements for smartphone makers, with it of the view that USB-C allows “greater convenience for consumers” and that including USB-C charging in every smartphone will also help cut down on waste as users do not have to buy a new power adapter every time they buy a new phone.
Right now, there is no final rule or proposal regarding the same and any Brazilian can share their views on the project to make USB-C mandatory for all the smartphones. The window for the user opinions is open till August 26, 2022. If granted approval, USB-C will become the mandatory standard on smartphones sold in Brazil as of July 1, 2024, which could force Apple to go for making USB-C iPhones to sell in the South American country.
