Apple SIM is no longer available for activating data plans on iPads

Starting October 1, 2022, Apple SIM can no longer be used to activate new cellular plans on iPads. MacRumors has reported that Apple has silently updated the cellular data support page which clearly mentions that the support for new activations using both standard and embedded Apple SIM will no longer be available. Although, those who are using the Apple SIM on their iPad won’t be affected by this change.
Apple SIM is an embedded SIM
Introduced in 2014, Apple SIM is an embedded physical SIM that can be configured with any telecom service provider’s profile and used with iPads to provide cellular services without the need of buying a new physical SIM from the service provider.
In some regions, Apple also included the SIM with cellular versions of iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 4, 5th- and 6th-generation iPads and 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Later the company started including the embedded version of the SIM with 9.7-inch, 10.5-inch and 2nd-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro models. Post these models all the iPads launched come with eSIM support.
Older iPad users can still buy a physical SIM to use cellular services
Apple has specified that if you are affected by this change, you can contact your service provider to know more about connecting the iPad to a cellular data plan. Meanwhile, users always have the option to use the good old physical SIM card and use it with their older-generation iPads. Newer iPad users also have the option to use eSIM for data services.
Why Apple has ‘discontinued’ the Apple SIM activations
Apple hasn’t provided any exact reason behind this step. However, it looks like a step in the direction of eSIM support. Now, every iPad model launched after 2018 supports eSIM and users now have the option to use the eSIM on their iPads for data connectivity. This means the need for Apple SIM and new activations using the SIM are no longer required.
