Australia news, Wallaroos unearth new star in Bienne Terita

New Wallaroos star Bienne Terita wasn’t even born the last time Australia tackled Scotland in a women’s rugby international.

Incredibly, the last meeting came way back at the 2002 Rugby World Cup, when the Aussies blanked the Scots 30-0 in the playoff for fifth and sixth.

That two decade gap means there is plenty of uncertainty in both camps ahead of Saturday’s World Cup clash in Whangarei.

But it won’t take an extensive video review for Scotland to identify rookie winger Terita as a major threat after her two try heroics in the loss to New Zealand last weekend.

The 19-year-old sevens convert now has four tries from just two Tests – both against the defending champion Black Ferns.

Terita’s battle with New Zealand great Portia Woodman, who scored a hat-trick, was a classic old bull vs young buck encounter.

“The way she finished those tries, she showed not only is she a world class sevens player, she’s a world class XVs winger as well,” Wallaroos coach Jay Tregonning said.

“She worked really hard for those tries too. It shows her skill set, her ability.

“Our depth on the wing is outstanding. There’s a couple of really quality players that missed out on selection this week.”

Wallaroos silence huge Eden Park crowd

Terita was understandably buzzing after playing in front of a women’s world record rugby crowd of 40,000 at Auckland’s Eden Park.

“The nerves were definitely there, playing at their home ground, in front of their home crowd,” Terita said.

“We put the pressure on early, which was good, just getting behind each other continually through the first half of the game.

“It wasn’t the result we wanted but I think we executed our game plan pretty well.”

The Wallaroos led 17-0 in the first half before conceding the next 41 points in the 41-17 defeat.

They are very aware of what’s coming from Scotland, who suffered a heartbreaking 18-15 loss to Wales in the 85th minute of their tournament opener.

“Northern hemisphere teams love their set piece game and I’m sure we’ll spend plenty of time on that this week,” Wallaroos prop Emily Robinson said.

“We’ll play how we want to play. We’ve reviewed them a fair bit and we know how we need to defend in terms of how to stop them from getting that roll on.

“I feel like we’ve got the tools to stop them.”
