In the press conference after stumps was called early for the second day in a row on Thursday, Smith was non-committal when asked if he’d take part in another Australian Test summer.
“I don’t know. We’ll see,” he said.
“I’m enjoying it at the moment. I really can’t say how long I’ll play for. I’m not sure.”
“Take it one tour at a time. Just enjoy it and enjoy training and trying to get better, as well. Whilst I’m doing that I’m happy playing.
“But I don’t know how long it’ll last.”
Speaking to Fox Cricket during Friday morning’s weather delay, Smith took a different route.
“I’m always very cryptic with all that stuff. But look, I’m not going anywhere. I’m comfortable where everything’s at.”
Smith on Thursday scored his 30th career Test ton, which moved him past Don Bradman and into third on the all-time list of Australian Test centurions.
He said while he had no immediate plans to retire, he indicated he had given some thought into what life might look like post-cricket.
“I enjoy helping people and even if (it’s just giving) some advice to some young batter in our team or at New South Wales or wherever, and you can see them get that smile on their face that they understand something and then they can implement that to their game.
“I get a big thrill out of that.
“I don’t know – maybe some coaching consultancy, maybe talking some cricket somewhere. I’m sure I’ll be involved in the game in some aspect.
“The game has been so good to me. I love it and I want to give back to it as much as possible.”
