Australian Open 2023 | Belinda Bencic’s coach’s sneaky ploy in player’s box caught on camera

Belinda Bencic had enjoyed a strong lead up to the Australian Open, and her coaches were not taking any chances against Italian Camila Giorgi.

Bencic won the Adelaide International, and had won seven matches in a row coming into the match.

Next to each players’ box in the main arenas at the Australian Open is a camera to capture the reaction of the team in key moments.

But Bencic’s camp wanted no part of it – covering up the low camera, leaving only the overhead shot.

“We can’t see right into that camera where that bit of paper is on the side there, but we can hover over the top. We have plenty of angles here,” Peter Marcato said on commentary.

“So much technology there that the coaches have. There’s plenty of stats feeds that they get in the match now, it’s a great innovation for the coaches.”

Bencic eventually reached the fourth round for the first time since 2016, beating Giorgi 6-2, 7-5 on Rod Laver Arena.

Bencic was broken when serving for the match at 5-4 but she broke in the following game and then served out to love for victory.

“I’m really happy I got a second chance to serve it out,” she said. “But overall I think it was a great match. (At 6-5) I just tried to relax. My coach (Dmitri Tursunov) was showing me relax (signals).”

“I think a lot of credit goes to my coach,” she said.

“We started working together at the end of October at the Billie Jean King Cup. We’re changing some things … I’m out of my comfort zone, so far it’s working well.”

Bencic plays either Aryna Sabalenka or Elise Mertens in the fourth round.
