Australian Open 2023 | Injured Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic’s ‘sad’ update on knee injury, surgery

Australia’s top ranked woman has given an update on the injury that forced her to pull out on the eve of the Australian Open.

Ajla Tomljanovic had a strong 2022, and was hoping to continue that form into the new year, but picked up a knee niggle in December.

“If you ask me, this is probably the worst timing ever,” the 29-year-old said during a press conference announcing her withdrawal.

Tomljanovic then indicated she wished to avoid surgery, instead preferring more “conservative methods”.

But in an update on social media on Saturday morning, Tomljanovic revealed she has had a “minor procedure” on her knee that “went very well”.

“Sadly I won’t be around the next few months, but I’m happy I did the necessary steps to get fully healthy,” she said.

“Great things take time and rehab starts very soon.”

She followed her injury progress update with a tweet condemning talk of a ‘Netflix curse’, which has swept the Australian Open after the release of ‘Break Point’.

Tomjlanovic, the former girlfriend of Matteo Berrettini, featured heavily in the episode that followed the Italian star, with the pair in a relationship at the time of filming.

After less than a week of the first grand slam of the year, the only player who was featured in the Netflix series who remains in the draw is Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime, sparking the ‘curse’ narrative.

Yet Tomjlanovic clearly doesn’t find the idea of a curse amusing, tweeting: “Can we stop with the Netflix curse lol…it’s just sports.”
