Roger Federer has sent Rafael Nadal a beautiful message on Instagram after the Spaniard became the first man to win 21 Grand Slam singles titles last night.

Nadal had been locked on 20 with great rivals Federer and Novak Djokovic before moving into clear air with his incredible five set comeback over Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final.

Swiss master Federer missed the tournament with injury.

“What a match! To my friend and great rival @RafaelNadal, heartfelt congratulations on becoming the first man to win 21 grand slam singles titles,” Federer wrote.

“A few months ago we were joking about both being on crutches. Amazing. Never underestimate a great champion. Your incredible work ethic, dedication and fighting spirit are an inspirational to me and countless others around the world.

“I am proud to share this era with you and honored to play a role in pushing you to achieve more. As you have done for me for the past 18 years. I am sure you have more achievements ahead but for now enjoy this one!”

Djokovic, meanwhile, was sensationally deported from Australia on the eve of the tournament because he wasn’t vaccinated against COVID-19.

The world No.1 – who has won nine Australian Opens – also took to Twitter to congratulate Nadal, whose dramatic 2-6, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 comeback win lasted five hours and 24 minutes and finished early in the morning.

“Amazing achievement,” Djokovic wrote.

“Always impressive fighting spirit that prevailed another time.”

Djokovic also congratulated Australia’s Ash Barty for winning the women’s title.
