BBL12 Hurricanes v Scorchers | Hurricanes firebrand Matthew Wade ‘sorry’ for Faf du Plessis moment

Hobart Hurricanes wicketkeeper Matthew Wade was forced to apologise to gun Scorchers import Faf du Plessis after the former Test gloveman yelled out moments before the batter was dismissed.

With du Plessis sitting pretty on 32 during Monday’s game, ‘Canes spinner Paddy Dooley sent down a delivery before stump mics caught Wade yelling “bowled” as the ball was still mid-pitch.

The ball did indeed crash into the stumps – but du Plessis was fuming at Wade’s premature yell and immediately gestured at the ‘keeper before walking off.

There was some suggestion the ball could have been called dead. It is illegal in cricket to deliberately distract a batter during a delivery.

Du Plessis to that point had been sensational, having blasted his 32 off just 15 balls before he was dismissed.

The Hurricanes eventually held on by just eight runs.

After the game, Wade admitted he probably made the call too early.

“I think (du Plessis) was disappointed,” he said on Channel 7.

“I called ‘bowled’ maybe a little bit early. I don’t know how early it was, but I think that’s why he was annoyed … apologies Faf.”

Dooley – playing just his third BBL match – announced his arrival in the competition, finishing with figures of 4-16 from his four overs.

Earlier, Ben McDermott was out first ball of the Hurricanes’ innings, before Wade and D’Arcy Short put on 67 for the second wicket when Andrew Tye had Wade caught for 51.

A quickfire 46 from Tim David and 22 from Shadab Khan pushed the Hurricanes’ total to 8-172.

In reply, du Plessis got the Scorchers off to a flyer. He took 20 off Joel Paris’ second over, before Dooley dismissed him at the end of the fourth.

Riley Meredith made it two in two balls when he had Adam Lyth caught. Nick Hobson became Dooley’s second victim in the next over.

Josh Inglis and Ashton Turner got the Scorchers’ innings back on track by putting on 75 runs for the fourth wicket, before Dooley got rid of Inglis and Agar in the space of three balls.

Needing 14 off the final over, Nathan Ellis was able to restrict the Scorchers to just 5, before Jhye Richardson holed out off the final ball.
