Australian athlete Breeana Walker is out to make history by winning the first ever Winter Olympics monobob gold medal.

The one-person bobsleigh event is making its Games debut, and the 29-year-old Queensland is considered one of the top medal chances.

She aced the practice runs three days ago and now returns to the ice track for the heats this afternoon.

“As an athlete you always go for the gold, and that’s exactly what I’m going for,” Walker said.

“Honestly, if I can lay down four of my best performances then I’ll be happy. If there’s a medal that is just a cherry on top.”

Walker was a champion 400-metre hurdler, and earned a scholarship for that discipline in America.

But repeated injuries cruelled her career on the running track, which is when she turned to the colder version.

She’s now based in Germany but says she’s Aussie through and through.

“I came back (from America) and had to ask myself the big question – was I going to be able to represent Australia at the Olympics in 400m hurdles?” she said.

“And really, the answer was no.”
