Birmingham v Hull match delayed because goalposts too big

The Championship match between Birmingham and Hull has been delayed by 20 minutes after it was discovered the goals were too big just before the match was due to begin.

Ground staff at MKM Stadium were forced to take the goalposts out of the ground and cut them to the required height, after a pre-match inspection from officials uncovered the embarrassing blunder.

The problem was compounded by the need to re-calibrate the HawkEye technology which is used to judge whether the ball has crossed the goal line.

“Kick-off this afternoon has been delayed to 3.20pm,” Hull tweeted shortly before the scheduled 3pm kick-off.

“The match officials have informed the club that the goalposts need to be readjusted and HawkEye recalibrated before the match can start.”

The drama comes less than a week after the FA launched an investigation into a match involving Wigan and Cardiff City, where it’s claimed the crossbar at one end was about five centimetres too high. That match went ahead with different sized goals after it was determined it would take two hours to fix the problem.

In that instance, Wigan shares the ground with the rugby league team of the same name, meaning the posts have to be removed and re-installed for each match.

Birmingham won the match 2-0 to move the side into 12th spot on the ladder, while Hull is mired in 21st spot, just one point above the relegation zone.
