Brisbane Broncos’ Selwyn Cobbo draws parallels with Latrell Mitchell, Greg Inglis

He’s played just seven NRL games, but 19-year-old Broncos phenom Selwyn Cobbo drew parallels with two superstars of rugby league during Brisbane’s trial match on Saturday night.

The rookie Bronco, who lined up on the right wing in the clash with the Titans but can also play in the centres and at fullback, scored the opening try of the night when he bashed his way through five minutes into the contest, which resulted in an enthralling 26-all draw.

Cobbo, who made his NRL debut as the Broncos met the Dragons in the 13th round of the 2021 season, burst onto a Billy Walters ball and bulldozed through two Titans defenders to slam the ball down.

Cobbo, in the eyes of Broncos great Corey Parker, has shades of retired NRL legend Greg Inglis and South Sydney gun Latrell Mitchell.

“You think of Greg Inglis at that age, you think of Latrell Mitchell,” Parker said on the Fox League broadcast.

“Well throw him in the same basket. He’s got a huge, huge football career (ahead of him).”

Cobbo bagged two tries from his seven top-grade appearances last season, while the livewire from Cherbourg in country Queensland also did some goal-kicking.

If Cobbo makes Brisbane’s right wing his own this season he’ll have the luxury of playing outside Kotoni Staggs, who played just four NRL games last year due to an ACL injury but is likely to represent the NSW Blues in the near future.

Former NRL journeyman Michael Ennis believes Cobbo could be set for a breakthrough season.

“I’m so excited this year for Brisbane and the potential of this young man,” Ennis said.

“Athletically he is just such a specimen.

“And to be outside Kotoni Staggs – we all know what he’s capable of.

“He could be in for a great year, Cobbo.”

The Broncos will begin their 2021 campaign in a match against the Rabbitohs in Brisbane on March 11.
