Camilla Duchess of Cornwall will rock Queen Mother’s crown at Prince Charles’ Coronation

The Queen announced on the eve of her Platinum Jubilee that when the time comes, it is her “sincere wish that Camilla will be known as Queen Consort” once Prince Charles becomes King. This is after 17 years of confusion among royal fans whether Camilla would be made a Princess Consort as was promised when she married Charles, or a Queen Consort as was clearly Prince Charles’ wish. According to the Daily Mail, Prince Charles changed his coronation vows several years ago to include ‘Queen Camilla’ – with his mother’s blessing.

It has also been revealed that Camilla will wear the Queen Mother’s priceless platinum and diamond crown when Charles is made King.

It was created for King George VI’s coronation in 1937.

The Queen Mother also wore the stunning jewellery piece at the State Openings of Parliament during her husband’s reign.

The crown was made by Garrard & Co., the Crown Jeweller at the time, and is modelled partly on the design of the Crown of Queen Mary.

However, it differs by having four half-arches instead of eight.

As with Queen Mary’s Crown, its arches are detachable at the crosses pattée, allowing it to be worn as a circlet or open crown.

It is the only crown for a British King or Queen to be made of platinum.

The Queen Mother’s crown features 2,800 diamonds with a large stone given to Queen Victoria in 1856 by the Sultan of Turkey.

This was a gesture of gratitude for British support during the Crimean War.

The front cross holds the famous 105-carat Koh-i-Noor diamond, which originated in India, in a detachable platinum mount.

After the death of the King, the Queen Mother did not wear the full crown ever again.

But she wore it minus the arches as a circlet at the Coronation of her daughter Elizabeth II in 1953.

Key national events are regularly the subject of planning reviews and, as the previous Coronation took place in 1953, officials want to make Charles’ ceremony more streamlined and up-to-date.

It is understood to have been shortened from the Queen’s three-hour long event according to a royal insider.

They told the Mail that while the event will still be “spectacular”, it will be designed to “better reflect the times”, with more religious, cultural and ethnic diversity.

They continued: “It also included the Duchess crowned Queen Consort.”

Any changes would have taken place with the Queen’s blessing and the knowledge of Buckingham Palace.
