CES 2023: Sony’s Project Leonardo aims making PlayStation more accessible

0

Sony is working on an improved PlayStation 5 controller called Project Leonardo. It consists of a set of customizable circular gamepads with buttons and directional input methods designed to make gaming more accessible for those with limited motor control.
Project Leonardo is intended to be fully compatible with the PS5 and will allow users to customize button mapping, switch out hardware components, and create personalized profiles.
Project Leonardo can be used on its own or along with DualSense controllers. When used with DualSense controllers, up to two Leonardos and one DualSense can be recognized by the PS5 as a single gamepad. This provides users with greater flexibility and allows for the possibility of multiple people helping to control a game.
The controller itself lies flat on a table or can be mounted on a tripod; it doesn’t need to be held. Sony partnered with a handful of organizations, including AbleGamers, SpecialEffect, and Stack Up, while designing Project Leonardo.
Project Leonardo made to offer customisable play experience
Project Leonardo allows players to customise their controllers to fit their specific needs by using various components to create different control layouts.
The distance of the analog stick from the gamepad can also be adjusted to the player’s preference. These customisation options enable players to find a configuration that is comfortable and accommodates their strength, range of motion, and any specific physical requirements.
There is an option to customise button mapping and create control profiles to suit their specific needs. Up to three control profiles can be saved and accessed on the PS5 at any time.
The hardware includes four 3.5mm AUX ports to accommodate a variety of existing accessibility accessories and switches.
Project Leonardo is similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller in that it allows users to customize their controller to meet their specific accessibility needs. Some features are built into the controller, while others can be added by the user. It is important to support various accessibility solutions, as everyone’s needs are different and specialized equipment can be costly.
Project Leonardo is currently in development, and no information on its availability or price has been announced.
