Despite missing their key players, West Indies had no problems whatsoever in the series opener as they bossed it with a comprehensive 7 wickets victory. It was a different new ball attack where left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein was joined by Matthew Forde and one change Shamar Joseph who combined put more pressure on the Proteas batters in the powerplay. After taking control at 42 for 5, Men in Maroon leaked runs at the death and ended up conceding 174 for 7 in the stipulated 20 overs.
The chase began on a positive with new opening pair Alick Athanaze and Shai Hope took on the inexperienced South African bowling attack to the cleaners and in a blink of an eye the scoreboard looked 84 for 1 in 8 overs. After Alick Athanaze departed at 40, destructive batter Nicholas Pooran joined the party when the equation was simple and hammered 65* in just 26 balls bringing his fastest T20I half-century in 20 balls.
South Africa’s result in the 1st T20I was very much decided in the powerplay of both innings as they lost 3 wickets when they batted first and conceded 75 runs when they bowled. With aging stars David Miller, Heinrich Klaasen, Quinton de Kock, and Keshav Maharaj rested, they fielded a new-look side that didn’t do well across all areas.
They struggled with the bat, losing their 5 wickets for just 42 runs, then a 71-run stand for the 6th wicket between Tristan Stubbs and Patrick Kruger steadied the ship.
