Chromebook shipments continue to decline: Report

Worldwide Chromebook shipments fell by 61. 9 per cent year-on-year in Q1 2022, closing at 5.1 million units, shows a recent report from IDC. This is another major decline after the Chromebook shipments witnessed a dip of 63.6 per cent in Q4 2021.
The total shipment dipped down to 5.1 million units last quarter from the total shipment of 13. 3 million units in Q1 2021. The report notes that the reason behind the decline in Chromebook shipments is the market saturation in mature markets such as the United States. However, developing markets, including Asia, have reported growth last quarter as the investment in the education sector continues to increase.
“The decline in Chromebooks doesn’t come as a surprise given the buildup of inventory due to reduced demand over the past several quarters,” said Jitesh Ubrani, Research Manager, IDC.
Urbani further noted that manufacturers will be clearing up the current stock with the help of promotional offers in the coming months. Further, the shipments are expected to increase as the new education starts after a couple of months.
The top five manufacturers in Q1 2022 were Lenovo, Dell, Acer, HP, and Samsung. As per the report, HP, the biggest vendor in the first quarter of last year, took the biggest hit last quarter, seeing an 82.1 per cent decline year-on-year.
In Q1 2022, Lenovo recorded a shipment of 1.2 million units with a market share of 23. 2 per cent. The shipments for Lenovo saw a dip of 65.6 per cent. Dell shipped 1.2 million units in Q1 2022, accounting for 22.9 per cent of the market share. Meanwhile, Acer had a 22 per cent market share and a total shipment of 1. 2 million units.

Samsung remained at the fifth position having a total shipment of 0.3 million units, down from 1. 3 million units in Q1 2021. The Korean electronics giant accounted for 6.5 per cent of the market share. Meanwhile, other manufacturers accounted for 0.5 million units out of the total worldwide shipment and a market share of 10. 1 per cent.
