The Sydney Roosters’ preparations for the 2023 season have been dealt a blow with star hooker Connor Watson picking up a potentially serious knee injury.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Watson picked up the injury while training on Friday, suffering a suspected patella tendon injury.

The 26-year-old is set to meet with a surgeon next week to determine a timetable on his potential return, but will miss the beginning of the NRL season.

Watson enjoyed a successful first season on his return to the Roosters in 2022, making 21 appearances for Trent Robinson’s side.

The stint is Watson’s second with the Roosters after making his debut for the club back in 2016.

He made 38 appearances across two seasons before joining the Newcastle Knights, where he made 66 appearances over four seasons.

Watson knocked back a contract extension with the Knights to re-join the Roosters on a two-year deal in 2022.

The Roosters will kick off their 2023 season by travelling to Brisbane to take on the NRL’s newest team, the Dolphins, in round 1 on March 5.
